Tesco e-business case

The method to create new opportunity, e-business
Electronic Commerce (EC) is new field, which every company finds new opportunity in. EC made the world to be one chained market, which can give opportunity for company to expand customer. EC is not a choice anymore but it’s mandatory.

Tesco in Electronic Commerce
- Frequent shopper program
- Customized DM, through combining point card and POS data system
- DM strategy make usage rate of coupon increase more than 60%

Club Card
Tesco is, as the biggest hypermarket in U.K., selling not only grocery but also CD, book, DVD, clothes, electronic goods and so forth. They use a club card as a marketing method. If customer register club card and use this card, they can compound the point that can be used any time and any store in Tesco branch and Tesco dot com.
This card can increase loyalty of customers as well as collect customers’ profile. That made huge data base of customer. It also enabled sending customized DMs.

Tesco.com (combining on-line & off-line)
In U.S.A., the biggest grocery internet store is England based Tesco.com and not American stores. How could they succeed in on-line business? That was a methodical electronic system. Base on their off-line store, they enabled to make delivery system. This delivery system enabled to deliver fresh groceries.
If customer clicked the goods they wanted, the goods are packed in logistic center. And then it is delivered by freezer truck. Their 760 chains and 16 logistic centers enabled that things which being delivered without any loss in their freshness.
In beginning of the Tesco.com (in 1998), they recorded a big loss. But due to high technology of electronic logistic system, they entered to positive profits record and their delivery system could cover 95% of U.K. area.

Digital cart
Tesco support digital cart system made it easier and faster for employees of logistic to find the goods, which customers ordered. Through this effort, they can carry out 7 orders at once. This system was developed for managing inventories. So they can manage to sell and to stock in real time.

E-business system became one of the core ability in Tesco. They still continue to make an effort to improve their system now. As mentioned above, E-system give many opportunities to us.

Should Planeta Group keep and redesign the platform or should they look for something new?

The Planeta is being confronted with the question, whether he has to go with the UNIX operating system or with Microsofr Windows NT Server.

▣ ALTERNATIVES
- UNIX Operating system (existing platform)
- Microsoft Windows NT Server (new platform)

Between the two alternatives, the decision can be made according to different perspectives. I have focused my decision based on technical perspective.

If I were Planeta, my choice would definitely be UNIX Operating system for the following reasons:

▣ PRICE
The initial cost for Microsoft Windows NT server is cheaper but when it comes to expanding, the addition cost becomes higher than using the UNIX Operating system. In the long-run, considering the hardware costs, software licenses, technical support agreements, prices of upgrades/service packs, costs of hardware upgrades, etc the overall cost of choosing the NT server is higher than the UNIX Operating system.

▣ STABILITY AND SCALABIITY

UNIX handles high server loads better than Windows and UNIX machines seldom require reboots while Windows is constantly needing them. Servers running on UNIX enjoy extremely high up-time and high availability/reliability. Web sites usually change over time. They start off small and grow as the needs of the person or organization running them grow. While both platforms can often adapt to your growing needs, Windows hosting is more easily made compatible with UNIX-based programming features like PHP and MySQL. However, UNIX-based web software is not always compatible with Microsoft technologies.

▣ SYSTEM MANAGEMENT

"NT has long enjoyed an intuitive user interface for managing single systems, largely benefiting from the exceptional familiarity of the Windows look-and-feel adopted by the NT GUI. However, as users begin to deploy large numbers of servers, and geographically-dispersed servers, some of NT's architectural shortcomings for system management have become more apparent, deriving primarily from its design as a single-user system. The multi-user design of UNIX supports remote access at multiple levels, including the ability to login with a character session, via telnet, to edit configuration files, running GUI tools over the network-enabled X Window System, and now through Java versions of system management tools. NT currently enjoys none of these features.
- <> by John Kirch –

▣ CONCLUSION
To sum it up, UNIX-based hosting is cheaper in cost in the long-run, more stable, performs faster and more compatible than Windows-based hosting, and easy to manage. Therefore my choice would be UNIX Operating system over Microsoft Window NT Server.

How to adopt ERP system

In my opinion, company should adopt ERP system, whether it can cover whole company’s process flow or not. ERP system can definitely reduce inefficient cost and increase income.

The most important consideration to keep in mind when adopting an ERP is the analysis of the effect to bring profit. Through the analysis, company must be able to make a benefit-cost plan and decide the scale of ERP.

I have two experiences in developing ERP as a member of task force team.

In my first experience, the method of adopting was not buying already made programs such as Oracle & Duzon but developing ERP system entirely for my company.
It was an awesome system. After the development, I was able to convert information to required formats.
Even after developing a customized system, there were some problems. The first problem was the cost to develop. Company invested 30 million USD for the development of ERP and had to spend millions more to maintain the system.

The second was period taken for developing ERP. From the decision to adopt ERP to the finish, the project took 2 years to understand the process flow of every department in the company, develop program for each flow and, emerge the whole process into a single program. It took additional 2 years to monitor and to bring about stable operation of system.

Lastly, we had a trouble with the developing company. In order to operate and to maintain the system, employees of the developing company stayed in my company. Different interests and opinions between two companies caused a lot of problems.

My second experience was buying of already made program. We bought Duzon, which is a program developed by Samsung SDI. This also had problems. It was not developed for a specific company. So the program was not customized. Even after receiving the data I wanted, I had to work one more step to make it into a required data.

I love my Dell laptop

If I were Dell, in situation where I am receiving many complaints from customers including power blogger, I will not care about that. Dell has a bunch of unique advantages to captivate customers rather than disadvantages addressed in several complaints. (Dell sells about 10 million PCs per year. If assume that people who buying Dell is friendly toward Dell, no. of complaints can be ignored.)

Before starting my MBA course I decided to buy new laptop. I considered several brands, which could offer an A/S service in Spain. Among some of brands I considered, I had no choice but to choose Dell.
Dell computer had the best price advantage. Just like the table below, if customers are rational and have to choose a laptop, they will select Dell without any hesitation.

Cheap price!!!
That’s why people still love Dell. Since Dell became leader in computer market, Dell have maintained the position to dominate the market. (M/S : 28.4% in 2007, Now HP is leading the market) How can they maintain cheap price? Do they use cheap and bad parts? Do they have a terrible A/S?
Answer is ‘No’. They brought a revolution in logistic of computer.

Revolution in logistic of computer market (Dealership → Direct sales to customer)

In dealer-based computer market, Dell was the first mover of the market to start selling PC without distributors. Customer ordered PC directly from Dell, and Dell Delivered PC directly to Customers. In this way, Dell could reduce the cost for distributors and Customers were able to buy PC for cheaper price.

Like this logistic revolution, Dell could succeed in computer market. In the beginning of the business, Dell advertised on professional magazine related to PC. Later they shifted to their homepage. Now, customers can order Dell anywhere and anytime through homepage with cheap price.

If I have a chance to buy computer once more, my choice will always be Dell without any hesitation.

Cyworld Vs. Facebook

Do you have your ID on Facebook? Facebook, the social network web site, is one of the most popular sites in the world. It has approximately three hundred million members from all around the world. However, if you are Korean, you probably have an ID on Cyworld, which is a Korean social network website. Moreover, more than half of Korean people have an ID on Cyworld, even if they don’t have an ID on Facebook. Basically, main concepts and functions of both sites are similar. For example, you can communicate with your friends, upload and show your pictures and movies, and publish messages on your wall. Also, they might help you broaden and deepen your social network by sharing thoughts, and expressing your interests. However, there are several factors that make Cyworld and Facebook different from each other, such as, connections with a portal site, main target, and design.

First, being connected with a portal site or not is one difference. In the case of Cyworld, it is connected with a large portal site, named Nate. Recently, Nate merged with Cyworld completely, and it provides a search service, e-mail service, and news content. Thus, people can search for information and manage their own home page on the same website. For this reason, people who are good at multitasking tend to prefer Cyworld. On the other hand, Facebook focuses on human networking and it does not have e-mail service or news content. Relatively simple contents and interface attract not only young people, but also adults, so Facebook has a huge range of users.

Second, the main target of each site is different. Cyworld is a domestic service, which means most of users are Korean. Therefore, the company can reflect hot issues in Korea to make items to decorate homepages. If Yu-Na Kim gets a gold medal in figure skating in the Winter Olympics, the company might make a lot of items related to her to sell to people. In addition, a lot of Korean movie stars and singers have this home page, and they show their private lives, and current feeling. Sometimes, news reporters observe the celebrities’ homepages, and they write articles from them. Thus, it is thought that Cyworld is completely customized to Korean. On the contrary, the target of Facebook is everyone all around the world. Therefore, we can make friends from other countries by sharing thoughts and information. Also, we can be a fan or a member of numerous clubs and pages about world famous people or characters, such as Family Guy, Paris Hilton, and Johnny Depp. We can meet other people from different countries in those pages. In addition, Facebook is an effective way to deepen human networks for international businessmen, and people who stay abroad. If people, especially young people, are in the United States, they will meet people who have various backgrounds, and they can be close friends by using Facebook. Even though they did not have a time to talk about their private lives in the meeting or in class, they can share their private lives on facebook by uploading pictures, writing a message, and responding to their pictures and messages. Therefore, it is said that Facebook is an essential tool to for people who have a connection with foreign people.

Finally, design is another difference between Cyworld and Facebook. For example, the size of Cyworld is smaller than Facebook because the size of Cyworld is 932 by 538 pixels, whereas Facebook is viewed in full screen. Also, on Cyworld, you can decorate your homepage by purchasing items, which includes homepage design, music, and fonts. Although the company provides a basic home page design to everyone, many people, especially young people or women, want to decorate their home pages more beautifully and more uniquely. For them, the expression of themselves is important in cyber space as well as in real life. In addition, people can resize and edit their pictures by using editing tools. Pictures can be put together and decorated by text and stickers, which makes people more engaged and interested. On the other hand, the design, provided by Facebook is simple. The main colors are blue, white, and black, and every home looks same. People cannot decorate their homepages by buying other designs. It seems to be more focused on the original functions of Facebook, for example, communication, uploading pictures, and writing a short message. People do not need to spend extra money to decorate their cyber house, and do not need to compete with friends in how they make their home page better. Also, the uploading speed of pictures on Facebook is faster than Cyworld, so people can upload a greater number of pictures, up to 200 at once, which is convenient.

Many people are eager to share their experiences and feelings with other people, and they stretch their communication to the social networking sites in cyber space. Both Cyworld and Facebook give us places to express ourselves, even though there are several differences in system, target, and design. As the IT technology grows so fast, their services will be developed more and there could be more fun sites in the future.

Google Vs. Naver in Korea

Why is Korea not googled?
When I had a drink with my brother, who is the director of promotion department for Naver, we always argued about Google and Naver. Actually I was on Google's side. I will share my brother thought as it is exciting to learn about Asian markets.

1. Cultural differences
Koreans really like to receive the information directly from the webpage rather than to search the information. Americans don't like the webpage, which has lot of fancy and colorful advertisement. They think it's annoying. But Koreans’ thinking is different from them. Koreans want to get much information from the webpage once it is opened. Where this cultural differences from? I think it is from speed of internet service. In Korea, nobody can think of using the internet at the speed of 10Megabite. Generally Koreans use internet speed of 1Gigabite. When someone opens the first webpage, there are several pictures and movies. People are annoyed because those pictures and movies reduce the speed of the internet. But the same situation is different in Korea. We can open any webpage within a second no matter how many pictures and movies there are.

. Google is totally based on words and sentences, so under slow internet environment, it is fast to use. Speed does not limit the contents of the webpage in Korea. This is why Google is not so popular as in rest of the world.

Microsoft Revolution

I’d like to call the change in development of personal computer as ‘Microsoft Revolution’

If anybody be asked ‘who is richest person in the world?’ nobody will hesitate to point out Bill gates. He has the powerful position from economic and socialogical point of view. His company(Microsoft corp.) had developed Windows, Internet explorer, Microsoft Office, etc. for personal computers.
And their software has changed and contributed to the promotion and development of the Internet and made the world faster and smaller.

History of Microsoft Corp.

MS was established in 1975 by Bill Gates & Paul Allen. In the early 1980’s, As Personal Computer of IBM gained big popularity from customers, MS which was in charge of producing MS-DOS(Operating System for IBM) dramatically grew up as well.

MS-DOS became a pronoun of OS for personal computer due to its convenience and easy adoptability to users. I think that it was the first user interface in my point of view.(I stared to learn computer with MS-DOS)

Since then, MS has started introducing Window Series, which made it possible for users to move the world with just one finger. Now it achieved such a great success dominating more than 90% in personal OS market in 2007. Based on window, MS introduced MS-Office Series which has been changing the working environment. By introducing Internet Explorer as a web browser, MS was able to become a solid leader in internet browser market.
Last week, MS launched MS-Office 2010. most of users expect it will change another our environment.
The more MS deveplopes the better world becames!!!
